He left college with a HND in Engineering a couple of years earlier and worked at a local automotive firm where an interest in cars drew him towards body repairs and paintwork. After realising he wanted to work for himself, Peter drove to North Wales to persuade his grandparents to lend him the money to build a garage in the garden of his parents’ home in Ugley Green, a small village to the north-east of Bishop’s Stortford.“Initially work came from friends, family, people from the local pub and living in the village — plus I also started to get known for repairing and restoring MGs and TRs,” recalled Peter. “From there, things naturally progressed to accident repairs, which I really enjoyed because it was quite fast-paced and you got a real sense of achievement from turning a damaged car into something that looked perfect again.”In 1991 Peter relocated to a brand-new unit in Elsenham with its own spray booth and paint mixing system but within three years, as expansion continued, Hilton Coachworks moved again to a 10,000 sq/ft site before moving to its present site in Raynham Road, Bishop’s Stortford, where they initially operated from a 20,000 square foot building complete with two ovens. It was from here that the business really began to take off.Thirty years after achieving its first manufacturer approved accreditation with Mercedes-Benz, Hilton Coachworks now boasts an impressive portfolio of 20 marques including such prestige names as Audi, Bentley and Tesla.Alongside Hilton Coachworks, Peter founded Hilton & Moss in the early 2000s as a business dedicated to classic car service and restoration. Castle Sportscars in 2001 dedicated the sales, service and repair to Lotus Cars.Joint ventures such as Hilton Leasing, Rental and Windscreens have allowed Hilton Group to offer a complete 360 service on all modern vehicles, all with customer service at the forefront of the business’ philosophy. In 2020 Hilton Group acquired Bespoke Performance — a business dedicated to the sales, service and repairs of TVRs.
